ALICE: The Brownstone-Basement Italian That Used to Be Gradisca
ALICE is what the longtime Village Italian Gradisca became — a seafood-forward, faintly Wonderland-themed date den in the basement of a W 13th Street brownstone, from the Osteria 57 family. Four small candlelit rooms, king-crab pappardelle, a Fig Old Fashioned. No happy hour posted; this one’s about the room.
ALICE doesn’t currently post a happy hour — doors open at 5pm daily and no discounted window appears on its menus.
If a raw-bar or martini window appears (the sort of thing this room was built for), we’ll update this page. For now, budget for full price and book the corner room.
About ALICE
The former Gradisca space at 126 W 13th re-emerged as ALICE — sister to Osteria 57 and Travelers Poets & Friends — with a seafood-leaning Italian menu and a gently surreal streak in the menu copy. The basement layout breaks into four small rooms, each candlelit, each with its own temperature of intimacy.
What to Expect at the Bar
No happy hour on the books — ALICE opens at 5pm daily and runs dinner service straight through (to 10pm early week, 11pm Thu-Sat). You’ll see stray listings claim an afternoon aperitivo here; they don’t match the posted hours, so don’t build a 4pm plan around them. The honest play: a 5pm walk-in at the bar, a Fig Old Fashioned, and the bucatini al limone before the rooms fill at 7.
What to Order
The pappardelle with king crab and truffle is the signature swing; the spaghettoni al pomodoro is the proof-of-kitchen. Cocktails lean botanical — the Fig Old Fashioned and the Perfect Darkness (basil-infused tequila, pineapple, hibiscus) headline. Seafood is the thread; order accordingly.
The Space & Vibe
Candles, fresh flowers, low ceilings, and four rooms of two-top intimacy — it’s engineered for anniversaries and audacious first dates. Quiet enough to talk, pretty enough that you won’t need to fill every silence.
The Greenwich Village Angle
126 W 13th between Sixth and Seventh Avenues is a brownstone block within five minutes of the F/M/L at 14th St-6th Ave and the 1/2/3 at 14th St-7th Ave. The New School is around the corner; the quiet is the point. Open 5pm daily.
