Dutch Fred’s: Hell’s Kitchen Prohibition-Era Cocktail Bar Since 2016

Dutch Fred’s is named for the cop who allegedly named the neighborhood. During a Prohibition-era riot on West 47th, veteran officer “Dutch Fred” turned to his rookie partner and said, “Hell’s a mild climate. This is hell’s kitchen.” The bar at 307 W 47th — between 8th and 9th, smack in the Theater District — leans hard into that lineage: 1920s setup, mosaic-tile floors, fire-paneled ceilings, framed portraits of Fred on the walls, black-and-white films looping behind the bar.

It’s the McNamee brothers’ fourth Hell’s Kitchen room, so the team knows how to run a Theater District bar without falling into tourist-trap territory. Tony Erzene, an Employees Only alum, built the cocktail program. The drinks are period-appropriate, the beer list runs 24 craft bottles deep, and the kitchen does shareable plates that hold their own as a pre-Broadway dinner. Open until 4am Mon–Wed, 2am Thu–Sun.

The Happy Hour

The deals run from late afternoon straight through to last call:

  • Freddie’s Happy Meal — daily 4–11pm — $27: kale Caesar or beef sliders + small fries + a house gin or vodka martini
  • Late night — daily 12am–close — $10 margaritas, whiskey sours, sangria, wine, and frosé; $6 beers
  • Weekend brunch — Sat & Sun — $30 unlimited teacup cocktails for 90 minutes with a brunch entrée
  • Strictly 21+ after 4pm. Bar seats are walk-in; reserve a table on OpenTable for pre-show slots (5:30–6:30pm books up at least three days out).

The Cocktails

This is a cocktail bar first and a restaurant second, by the owners’ own description. Tony Erzene’s menu leans Broadway-and-Prohibition: the Curtain Call (rye, amaro, lemon, egg white, shaved nutmeg) is the house signature, the Dutch Courage (jenever, celery bitters, lemon, mint, orchid flowers) is the other, and there’s a deep Manhattan section locals call one of the better programs in Midtown. Beer drinkers get 24 craft bottles including Speakeasy Metropolis Lager and 21st Amendment Brew Free or Die IPA, alongside a modest, functional wine list.

The Food

Shareable plates engineered to pair with cocktails — Thai deviled eggs, ceviche, eggplant chips, goat-cheese-and-fig-jam crostini, roasted carrot salad, flatbreads, a cheese board — with bigger mains at dinner. Weekend brunch gets a dedicated menu featuring a stuffed French toast that shows up in most positive reviews. The late-night kitchen runs until 2am, which makes Dutch Fred’s a rare Theater District room where a post-show plate of food is actually possible past 10:30pm.

The Room

Long and narrow with low fire-paneled ceilings — the kind of room that feels like a basement bar from a Fitzgerald short story. Mosaic-tile floors, framed photos of the real Dutch Fred, and flat screens looping black-and-white films instead of sports. The music tilts upbeat — not speakeasy-quiet, not nightclub-loud — the right register for a pre- or post-show drink where you can still hold a conversation. There’s an outdoor patio on West 47th in season, and private events book through the events coordinator. The 50th St A/C/E and the 49th St N/Q/R/W are both two-block walks, three blocks from most W 45th and W 46th theaters.
