Malachy’s Irish Pub: The Upper West Side Bar That Never Needed a Happy Hour
Malachy’s Irish Pub has been on West 72nd since 1989, and it does not run a happy hour. It doesn’t advertise one on its site, its Google listing, or anywhere we could verify — and after a few minutes in the room you understand why. Google pegs typical spend at $10 to $20 a person. On a block where a cocktail bar will take $19 off you for one drink, that is the discount.
This is a real pub: dark wood, TVs on, a kitchen doing burgers and wings and Irish standards, and a bar staff that has seen every version of you. It’s half a block from the 1/2/3 at 72nd Street and two blocks from the Beacon Theatre, which is why the regulars include stagehands and crew from the Beacon and Lincoln Center. It also goes by Malachy’s Donegal Inn, which is what the old-timers and half the review sites still call it. Recently renovated out front, with an event room added — but not, thankfully, gastro-pubbed.
The Happy Hour
There isn’t a posted one. As of August 2026, Malachy’s Irish Pub advertises no happy hour — nothing on malachysirishpub.com, nothing in its Google Business Profile, and nothing verifiable on the happy-hour aggregators, several of which list the pub with an empty specials section. We’d rather tell you that than invent a window. What you get instead is a flat, low, all-day price level and a 2am license Monday through Saturday. Bar staff run specials from time to time; ask when you sit down. If the pub does put a window on the board, we’ll list it here.
The Room
103 West 72nd, mid-block between Columbus and Amsterdam, behind a facade that got a facelift while the inside stayed put. Long wooden bar, stools that are usually taken by 6, booths at the back, and a new event room for when someone books the place out. The kitchen turns out American and traditional Irish pub food and the owner will tell you it’s the best pub food on the block — a claim he is entitled to make and you are entitled to test. Come for a Guinness after a show at the Beacon, or at 3pm on a Tuesday when the place is nearly empty and that’s the appeal. The 1, 2 and 3 stop at 72nd St basically at the door; the B and C are two blocks east.
Who Malachy’s Irish Pub Is For
| Occasion | Why It Works |
|---|---|
| A drink before or after the Beacon | Two blocks from the theatre and open to 2am, so the after-show crowd fits |
| Drinking cheaply on the Upper West Side | $10–$20 a head is a rare number above 59th Street |
| An afternoon pint with nobody bothering you | Doors open at noon daily and the room is quiet until the evening |
| Pub food and a game on | Burgers, wings and Irish standards with TVs going behind the bar |
