The Deal Updated June 2026
Rudy’s deal is the stuff of NYC legend: a free hot dog with every drink, and some of the cheapest beer in Manhattan — no timed happy hour required, because the prices stay low all day. A house ‘Rudy’s Blonde’ runs around $3–4, pitchers are the move, and a frank comes free with every drink, spinning on a rotating grill behind the bar (yellow mustard and ketchup, no condiment bar — don’t ask). It’s cash only. Reviewers routinely call it one of the best happy hours in Hell’s Kitchen, even though Rudy’s would tell you it’s just how they’ve always done it since 1933.

Rudy’s Bar & Grill: Hell’s Kitchen’s Legendary Free-Hot-Dog Dive

Rudy’s Bar & Grill is a true NYC dive bar legend — a no-frills Hell’s Kitchen institution pouring cheap beer and serving free hot dogs since 1933, when it opened with one of the first liquor licenses issued in the city after Prohibition. Step through the original wood door, carved down the center with the Rudy family name, and the old neighborhood saloon is still right there: dim light, red duct-tape-patched booths, and Baron Von Swine, the six-foot pink pig in a red tuxedo, smiling out front.

The deal is the draw — a free hot dog with every drink and a house ‘Rudy’s Blonde’ for a few bucks — but so is the history. It’s the Rudy’s from Steely Dan’s ‘Black Cow,’ it was one of Anthony Bourdain’s favorite spots, and the back patio fills up for soccer with a massive projector. It’s cash only, it’s open from 8am to 4am most days, and it’s about as quintessentially NYC as a dive gets.

The History

Rudy’s opened in 1933 by the Rudy family — there’s even a Hell’s Kitchen rumor that the joint was a speakeasy back in 1919, frequented by the likes of Al Capone. The present owner, Jack Ertl, started drinking here in 1943 at 16, ‘back when Hell’s Kitchen was really Hell’s Kitchen.’ It may be the most famous bar in New York, with a long, colorful history — Steely Dan hung out here in the ’70s (this is the Rudy’s from ‘Black Cow’), and Anthony Bourdain counted it among his favorite spots in the city.

The Vibe

It’s gloriously unpretentious: worn red leather banquettes held together with duct tape, a dimly lit front room, free WiFi, and an unexpected backyard patio that comes alive during soccer games, with a massive projector and the game on. The franks spin slowly on a rotating grill behind the bar, served unembellished in a bun with a swipe of mustard and ketchup. Cash only, every day, all day — a place built for spending many hours.

The Room

Rudy’s sits at 627 Ninth Avenue, between 44th and 45th in Hell’s Kitchen — look for Baron Von Swine, the red-tuxedoed pink pig, parked out front. Inside it’s a proper dive: dim, duct-taped, and unbothered, with a surprise backyard patio out back that’s the spot for soccer and a projector. It’s cash only and open 8am to 4am most days (noon on Sundays). The A/C/E at 42nd St–Port Authority is a couple of blocks away.
