About St. Mazie

Established in 2012, St. Mazie is the work of John McCormick — owner of the Williamsburg institution Cafe Moto and a designer behind local favorites including Five Leaves, Maison Premiere, and Spritzenhaus. He built St. Mazie, and the restaurant beneath it, St. Charles Cellar, as an elegant, slightly dreamlike drinking-and-dining spot, then layered in live music ranging from flamenco to gypsy jazz to 50s vinyl DJ sets.

One regular’s description sums up the mood: it transports you to Paris in the 40s while you sit among the Williamsburg crowd. Upstairs is a cocktail bar with oysters; downstairs is a full, speakeasy-style restaurant; and out back is a garden with a delightfully overgrown grapevine.

The Happy Hour

Happy hour runs daily from 5pm to 7pm and is genuinely well-priced for the room: house wine is $6, house beer is $5, oysters are $1.50 apiece, and there’s a six-oysters-and-a-glass-of-bubbles deal around $14. It’s an ideal early-evening setup — arrive right at opening, grab a cocktail and a few oysters before the tables fill, and stay for the music.

What to Order

Lead with the oysters and a glass of bubbles during happy hour. Beyond that, Mazie’s Famous Burger is the dish people single out, and there’s a modest menu of well-executed plates (including a notably spicy veggie burger). The cocktails skew classic and fit the speakeasy mood.

The Space and Vibe

The upstairs room is small and club-like, with tight tables reminiscent of a jazz club and a warm, vintage glow. The cellar restaurant feels like a hidden supper club, and the back garden adds open-air seating in season. Live music is the throughline — you can hear the band from most of the room, so a seat near the stage isn’t essential. Reservations are wise; it fills quickly, especially on weekend nights with two seatings.

The Williamsburg Angle

St. Mazie sits at 345 Grand Street near the Williamsburg Bridge, in the thick of the Grand Street bar-and-restaurant run. Between $1.50 oysters, cheap house pours, and live jazz, it’s one of the better-value early-evening stops in the neighborhood — and one of the few where the happy hour comes with a show.
