Happy Hour at The Village Vanguard
The Village Vanguard is the most storied jazz room in New York, a cramped triangular basement on Seventh Avenue South that has run continuously since 1935 and has hosted jazz exclusively since 1957. This is the venue behind an untold number of landmark “Live at the Village Vanguard” records from Coltrane, Bill Evans, Sonny Rollins and beyond, and the resident Vanguard Jazz Orchestra still plays here every Monday night.
It runs on a cover charge and a one-drink minimum rather than any kind of happy hour, and that is the whole point. You buy a ticket in advance, take a seat close to the band, order your one drink, and settle in for a set in a room where the acoustics and the history do the heavy lifting.
What to Expect
There is no happy hour and no drink special at the Vanguard. Admission is set per artist and generally runs about $25-$40 a head, with a one-drink minimum charged on top; the minimum can be met with a soft drink, juice or bottled water if you would rather not drink. No food is served and outside food is not allowed, so plan on dinner before or after.
The Room
The room is a small, wedge-shaped basement that seats roughly 120, with tables and chairs packed tight around a low stage and famously warm acoustics. Red walls lined with decades of jazz photographs set the tone, and there is no bad seat, only closer ones.
