The rundown

How to work Manhattan happy hour

Where you drink in Manhattan comes down to two things: what you’re after, and what time it is. Here’s how the map breaks down.

Downtown is where the value lives. The East Village, Lower East Side, Alphabet City and the West Village hold the highest concentration of legit happy hours in the borough — cheap, packed, walkable. You can start on one block and hit four more without a cab. Down here, $5 drafts and half-price appetizers are the rule, not the exception.

Midtown and the Financial District run on the after-work clock. The deals follow the 5pm exodus. Hell’s Kitchen has the highest happy hour density of any neighborhood in Manhattan, and when the offices empty out in FiDi, the bars off Wall Street fill fast. Want a rooftop with skyline views and a handcrafted cocktail? This is where it is. Want a working bar with no arena markup? That’s the block near Madison Square Garden.

Uptown is the slower pour. The Upper West Side, Upper East Side and Harlem trade density for a neighborhood pace — a historic pub, a quiet bar, a deal you don’t have to elbow your way to. Fewer spots, but the ones worth knowing are on each guide.

On timing: most Manhattan happy hours run 4–7pm on weekdays. A handful open the window at 2pm and a few run all day, but Sunday is the thinnest day across the board — so check the neighborhood guide before you make the trip. After something specific? We break it out by $1 oyster deals and dive bars in the roundups too.

Manhattan happy hour FAQ

What time does happy hour start in Manhattan?

Most Manhattan happy hours run 4–7pm on weekdays. A few start much earlier — John Doe in NoMad opens its $1-oyster window at 11am every day, The Gin Mill on the Upper West Side pours $5 everything from its 11:30am open, and Boucherie in the West Village runs its Green Hour at the bar from 2pm daily. Down the Hatch runs 50% off the entire bar from 2pm until 7pm on weekdays. Sunday is the thinnest day, so check the neighborhood guide before you go.

What happy hours are on right now in Manhattan?

Our happy hour right now page lists every Manhattan deal running at this minute, nearest first, straight from our venue data. For tonight: John Doe and The Gin Mill run until 8pm every day, Down the Hatch’s half-off ends at 7 on weekdays, and the late windows start at 10pm — see the late-night happy hour guide.

Which Manhattan neighborhood has the best happy hours?

For sheer density and value, it’s a toss-up between the East Village and Hell’s Kitchen — both have the highest concentration of legitimately good deals in the borough. For range and quality, the West Village is the benchmark. For after-work, the Financial District empties out at five and the deals follow.

Where are the cheapest drinks in Manhattan?

Down the Hatch in the West Village is hard to beat — 50% off the entire bar, Mon–Fri 2–7pm. Art Bar pours $5 drafts, house wine and well drinks daily 4–7pm, and The Gin Mill on Amsterdam does $5 beer, wells and shots every day until 8pm. As neighborhoods, the East Village and Alphabet City are where the cheap-drinks density lives.

Are there weekend happy hours in Manhattan?

Yes, but fewer than weekdays. John Doe runs $1 oysters 11am–8pm on Saturday and Sunday too, The Gin Mill does $5 beer, wells and shots until 8pm on weekends, and Boucherie (2–7pm, bar only) and Bobo (5–7pm, in the Den) in the West Village go all week. Down the Hatch runs $5 cans and bottles from noon on weekends. For the full set, see the best Saturday happy hours and Sunday happy hours in NYC.

Does Times Square have good happy hours?

The signs in the heart of Times Square are mostly tourist traps. The move is the neighborhood spots a few blocks off the lights, plus the working bar block near Madison Square Garden. Our Times Square guide maps where locals actually drink.

Happy hour deals change, and not always with notice. We check and date every listing, but the bar is the final word — confirm before you make the trip. Last updated October 28, 2026.
