Pubs in NYC
Cask ale on a hand pump, the Sunday roast, a real chip shop, and where to watch the football – 12 British pubs in NYC, every deal verified against the venue’s own menu, all of them mapped.
Most British pubs in NYC run happy hour 4-7pm – The Shakespeare opens its window at 11am on weekdays.
- 12 verified pubs
- HH pints from $5
- windows from 11am
- cask ale at 2
The best British pubs in NYC right now are The Shakespeare (hand-pulled cask ale and a seven-hour weekday happy hour, $7 pints and $11 wines, 11am-6pm), Jones Wood Foundry (every draft including the cask at $8.50, Mon-Fri 4-6pm at the bar), Tea & Sympathy (the real Sunday roast, Sundays only, a dozen tables), A Salt & Battery (an actual chip shop, not a pub kitchen), and The Monro (Liverpool’s Brooklyn home, doors 90 minutes before kickoff).
We checked every one of these British pubs in NYC against its own site this month and cut every claim we could not stand behind – a lot of British-pub listings in this city are quietly wrong. Most cluster in the West Village (1/2/3 to 14th St) and on the Upper East Side (Q to 86th), with two football locals in South Slope. More citywide picks in our happy hour guide.

The Shakespeare
24 East 39th St, Murray Hill · English pub under The William · cask ale on hand pump
The best British pub in NYC, and it earns the call on all three things this list is judged on: the longest happy hour here by a distance, real cask ale, and a room worth sitting in. It opened in 2014 under Jason Hicks, an Englishman from Stratford-upon-Avon, in the old Williams Club building on 39th, and it isn’t doing a bit: dark wood, leather banquettes, low light, and a rotating cask ale pulled by hand pump the traditional way at $12.
The draft list behind it runs deeper than the room’s size suggests – Guinness and Old Speckled Hen at $10, Allagash, Fiddlehead, Jack’s Abby and Singlecut at $9 – with $2 off Narragansett and Lagunitas Daytime taking a $9 pint to $7 from 11am to 6pm. The kitchen does the canon straight: beer-battered cod and chips, bangers and mash, shepherd’s pie, and a British grilled cheese of English cheddar, Stilton and Dijon on sourdough.
The Local Move: stack the $20 two-course lunch prix fixe (weekdays to 3pm) with a $7 happy-hour pint and you have done lunch and a drink three minutes from Grand Central for under $30.

British pubs in NYC with a real happy hour

The Shakespeare On now
The Verdict: the best British pub in NYC, and the longest weekday happy hour of any of them. Seven hours, Monday to Friday, with the rotating cask on hand pump at $12 and $2 off Narragansett and Lagunitas Daytime the whole time.
For a group, the pub has seven named spaces to book: The Library does 40 standing in mahogany panelling with a wall of books and an open fireplace; The Peacock Parlor takes 35 under painted peacocks and wood panelling; The Garden Room seats 60 beneath a Waterford Crystal chandelier; and the Abingdon Room downstairs holds 25 behind its own entrance.
The Honest Caveat: the deal is weekdays only, it’s closed Sunday so it isn’t a roast destination, and their hours page lists doors at 11:30am even though the happy hour menu says 11am – don’t plan a hard 11am pint without calling. Thursday and Friday nights the dining room is small enough to want a reservation.

Jones Wood Foundry On now
The Verdict: the best value of any British pub in NYC, and the closest thing on this list to The Shakespeare. It is the only other pub here where we could confirm real cask ale – and the rotating cask is included in the $8.50 happy-hour price, which is the cheapest way to drink cask in this city.
The kitchen does beer-battered cod in a crisp batter with triple-cooked chips, plus a Scotch egg worth ordering. The Local Move: Monday to Thursday they open at 4pm, so the happy hour starts the moment the doors do – walk in at 4:01, take a bar stool, and you have two hours of $8.50 cask.
The Honest Caveat: the deal is at the bar only, so a table for six pays list price. Outdoor seating in summer, the fireplace room in winter. On 1st Ave at 76th.

The Spaniard On now
More whiskey gastropub than chippy, but it earns its place – the West Village’s deepest whisk(e)y list lives here, behind a corner bar that feels like it has been there a century. Speyside, Highland, Lowland, Islay and the Isles, plus Japanese, bourbon, rye, Irish, Canadian and Korean. The happy hour is honest: Monday to Friday 4 to 7, two dollars off every draft, and the kitchen runs the $12 Little Spaniard smash burger that punches well above the price.
The Local Move: grab a stool, ask the bartender to point you at a scotch you have not had, order the burger. Not strictly British, but more proper-pub than half the British pubs in NYC flying a Union Jack. It is the corner of West 4th and West 12th – the intersection that confuses tourists.

The Penrose On now
The cheapest reliable pint of any of the British pubs in NYC on this list, and a gastropub that gets the balance right – a genuinely good burger, a long bar, screens for the game, and a window that runs three hours instead of two. Weekdays 3 to 6 it is a $5 mug of Spaten, $12 house cocktails, and $12 glasses of Pinot Noir or Pinot Grigio.
Then 10After10 keeps $10 espresso martinis, spicy margaritas and a Spaten-plus-well-shot going every night after ten, which is the actual reason people stay. Worth It if you are on the Upper East Side and want a pub that does food properly without going full theme bar. The Local Move: weekend brunch at the bar runs its own deal until 3:30pm. On 2nd Ave near 82nd, by the Q.

Lillie’s Victorian Establishment On now
It looks like a Victorian gin palace because it more or less is – carved wood, etched glass, chandeliers, all salvaged and shipped over. The happy hour is better than the room lets on and almost nobody lists it correctly: $12 signature cocktails (the Blackberry Moscow Mule, an espresso martini, the Gaslight), $10 Pinot Grigio, Cabernet and prosecco, $6 beer, $12 bites and $8 truffle fries.
Monday to Thursday it runs 4 to 6 and then again from 10pm to 2am; Friday it starts at 2pm. The Local Move: the late window is the one to use – same prices, a quarter of the crowd, and the room looks its best under the chandeliers at 11pm. Afternoon tea runs Friday to Sunday, 11am to 3:30pm, if you are being fancy.
The Honest Caveat: they open at 4pm Monday to Thursday, so this is not a morning-kickoff pub – and don’t confuse it with the Times Square location on West 49th.

Caledonia Bar On now
The Scottish corner of this guide, and it leans all the way in – over 200 whiskies and a crowd that is here for the drams, not the decor. The happy hour is published as a finish line rather than a window: Monday to Friday, until 7pm.
In practice that means it starts when the doors do, which is 5pm Monday to Thursday and 4pm on Friday, so Friday quietly gives you the longest run at it. Two dollars off beer and wine, and half off the featured whisky of the month, which is the one to chase.
The Local Move: Sunday jazz 6 to 8, Tuesday trivia at 8 sharp, a single malt you cannot pronounce any night of the week. Worth It once you have worked through the other British pubs in NYC and want the Highlands. On 2nd Ave at 83rd – and note there is a separate Caledonia on the Upper West Side.

The Red Lion On now
One of the few British pubs in NYC that doubles as a music venue – a band most nights on Bleecker, the football on by day, and the officially recognised New York home of Brentford FC, which is about as British as this list gets. It has hosted the NYC Bees since 2021 and opens at 11am on match days.
The happy hour is narrower than most listings claim: Monday to Thursday only, 4 to 7, and it covers the two house taps, wells, house wine and the house Mule or margarita rather than the whole draft list. They don’t publish the prices, so we won’t invent them.
The kitchen is solid – the Red Lion burger at $23, fish and chips at $22, shepherd’s pie at $18. The Local Move: pint and a burger at 5, stay for whoever is on at 9. With the 2026 World Cup in town it is already booking watch parties.

No deal, worth the trip
The proper rooms – the roast, the chippy, the match. These five British pubs in NYC publish no happy hour, so you come for the pub, not the discount. More on the match in our best soccer bars in NYC guide.
Tea & Sympathy
The Verdict: if you want an actual British Sunday roast in this city, this tiny Greenwich Avenue room is where you go. Running since 1990, a dozen tables, run with the brisk warmth of a London aunt who will tell you to mind the rules posted on the wall. The roast is Sunday only – beef, lamb or chicken at $39.95, a vegetarian version at $34.95 – and the Yorkshire pudding is a $3.50 side you should add.
The Full Monty is the hangover cure; the afternoon tea is the genteel version. Not a bar and not a happy hour: it is a restaurant and a shrine, and it closes at 9pm. Book ahead, it seats almost nobody. The Local Move: roast here, then walk two doors down to A Salt & Battery for chips you did not need.
teaandsympathy.com · Full profile on Happy Hour NYC · See our West Village happy hour
A Salt & Battery
The Local Move: skip the sit-down fish and chips elsewhere and come to the actual chip shop. A Salt & Battery is a counter, a fryer, lightly battered deep-fried fish, traditional thick-cut chips and a wall of malt vinegar – no frills, no happy hour, no need for either.
It has been on Greenwich Avenue for a quarter century under the same ownership as Tea & Sympathy next door, which is why the two together are the most efficient British lunch in Manhattan. Get it wrapped, ask for mushy peas, eat it on the bench outside. The Honest Caveat: it is a takeaway counter with a handful of stools, so this is not where you take four people and a coat.
asaltandbattery.com · Full profile on Happy Hour NYC · See our best burgers in NYC
The Churchill Tavern
The closest any of the British pubs in NYC gets to a London boozer, and it knows it: Union Jacks, dark wood, Churchill on the walls, and a kitchen that takes the Sunday roast seriously – served every Sunday from noon until it runs out, with the cut rotating between beef, chicken and lamb. Twelve taps pour mostly UK beer, and the fish and chips is the safe weekday move.
The Honest Caveat: they publish no happy hour on their current site, so ignore the aggregator listings that claim one – come for the room and the roast, not a $6 pint. And it gets slammed after work, which makes a 5pm Sunday the civilised play. Ten minutes from The Shakespeare if you want to make an afternoon of Murray Hill.

The Monro Pub
The Verdict: a Scouse pub on a Brooklyn corner and the best place in the city to watch Liverpool, full stop. Founder Vinny Evans is from Liverpool, the Official Liverpool Supporters Club of Brooklyn – roughly 300 members – is based here, and he opens 90 minutes before kickoff, which for a 7:30am Premier League start tells you everything about the commitment level.
The order is a DUB pie, the New Zealand-style meat pie that is far better than a pub pie needs to be, and they go out all day. The Honest Caveat: aggregator sites list a daily 4-8pm happy hour and a $10 pie-and-pint here; the pub publishes neither, so we are not repeating them – call if the price matters.
Go Here Instead of a sports bar when you want the match with actual atmosphere. On 5th Ave near 11th.
monropub.com · Full profile on Happy Hour NYC · See our best soccer bars in NYC
Black Horse Pub
Brooklyn’s answer to an English local, and the room South Slope expats pile into for the football. Big screens, an English breakfast that regulars swear by, and a Saturday-morning crowd nursing pints through the early kickoffs – they open at 10am on weekends specifically for it, and run to 4am on a Friday.
The Honest Caveat: don’t trust the deal aggregators here either. No happy hour is published anywhere, and their own site has not been updated since spring, so come for the match and the fry-up rather than a discount. Go Here Instead if Manhattan’s pubs feel too polished and you would rather watch Arsenal with people who actually care. On 5th Ave at 16th, four blocks from The Monro if the first one is full.

The Shakespeare in Murray Hill, by a distance – Monday to Friday, 11am to 6pm, seven hours. It is $2 off Narragansett and Lagunitas Daytime pints (down to $7), $11 house wines, and $10-12 bar snacks. The lines rotate at both, so ask what is on. The Churchill Tavern pours twelve mostly-UK taps but publishes no cask engine, so don’t go there expecting one.

Add the Yorkshire pudding as a $3.50 side and book ahead, because it is tiny. The Churchill Tavern in Murray Hill serves a generous bar-style roast every Sunday from noon until it sells out, with the cut rotating week to week.
Which British pub in NYC has the cheapest pints?
The Penrose in Yorkville runs a $5 mug of Spaten on its weekday happy hour (Mon-Fri 3-6pm), the cheapest published pint of any British pub in NYC here. Jones Wood Foundry’s $8.50 happy-hour drafts (Mon-Fri 4-6pm, at the bar) include the rotating cask ale, which is the better deal if real ale is what you came for.
