No happy hour — this tiny West Village tea room trades in proper afternoon tea and British comfort food rather than discounted drinks. Tea & Sympathy doesn’t run a happy hour. The draw is the full afternoon tea service (about $60 per person) and a menu of shepherd’s pie, bangers and mash, and Sunday roast, served all day.

Tea & Sympathy: a corner of England in the West Village

Tea & Sympathy has been a stubbornly British holdout on Greenwich Avenue since 1990, a cramped little room with floral tablecloths and mismatched china where homesick Londoners and curious locals crowd in for a proper cup. Founder Nicky Perry still runs it, and the place has the lived-in, no-frills warmth that no themed tea room could fake.

The kitchen turns out honest English comfort food all day: shepherd’s pie, bangers and mash, Welsh rarebit, and a Sunday roast with Yorkshire pudding. The headline event, though, is afternoon tea — a tiered stand of finger sandwiches, scones with clotted cream, and cakes that regularly sells out, so book ahead and don’t roll in at closing.

What to Expect

There’s no happy hour here. Tea & Sympathy is a tea room, not a bar, and its value is in the afternoon tea service and the from-scratch British menu rather than any timed drink deal.

The Room

A snug, homey corner spot with room for maybe a dozen tables, dressed in floral cloths and homey china. It’s tight, cheerfully chaotic, and famously brisk with the service — part of the charm. The affiliated A Salt & Battery chippy and Carry On grocery sit right next door.
