  • ~15 min total walk
  • beer from $3
  • one stop from WTC

The best Downtown Jersey City bar crawl is five stops in about fifteen minutes of walking, all a few blocks from the Grove Street PATH: start at Hudson Hall on Marin Boulevard for $3 Miller High Life, eat at Skinner’s Loft on the Newark Avenue plaza ($5 tapas until 6), drink a proper $11 Manhattan at The Archer, catch the last of Pint’s $5 wells before 7, and finish at Grace O’Malley’s, the Irish pub on the plaza with bands at night. Start at 4pm on a Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. That’s the only way all four happy hours line up: Skinner’s is closed Tuesdays, and Hudson Hall and The Archer don’t discount on weekends. It’s one PATH stop from the World Trade Center, and every stop below is timed around its own posted window.

Walk it in order. Each stop is 45 minutes and one drink. More downtown options in our Downtown Jersey City happy hour guide.

01Hudson Hall

On nowStarts soon

Beer hall & smokehouse · 364 Marin Blvd · $$

  • Order thisA $3 Miller High Life or $5 house lager, plus a $10 app
  • Happy hourArrive 4:00 · happy hour Mon–Fri until 6pm

Verdict: start with the cheapest beer on the route. Hudson Hall’s weekday happy hour has been running since 11:30am by the time you arrive, and it holds $3 High Life and a $5 house lager until 6. Order one of the $10 select apps too, because the next stop is the food stop and you want a base before it. Honest caveat: it’s a big room, and on a game day it’s loud. Four minutes’ walk to the plaza.

02Skinner’s Loft

On nowStarts soon

Restaurant with a bar downstairs · 146 Newark Ave · $$$

  • Order thisThree $5 tapas and a $5 Heineken
  • Happy hourArrive 4:50 · $5 tapas 4–6pm (closed Tue)

Verdict: dinner, done for $20. From 4 to 6, a kitchen that charges $25 for its burger sells eleven tapas at $5 each. Get the nduja arancini, the buffalo chicken spring rolls and the deviled eggs at the downstairs bar, with a $5 Heineken. Honest caveat: it’s closed on Tuesdays, which is why this crawl skips Tuesday. On a Friday, swap in The Ashford across the plaza: 4 to 7pm, apps, drafts, wine and espresso martinis are all $5.

03The Archer

On nowStarts soon

Hunting-lodge cocktail bar · 176 Newark Ave · $$

  • Order thisAn $11 Manhattan or old fashioned
  • Happy hourArrive 5:40 · cocktail hour Mon–Fri 5–7pm

Verdict: the one good cocktail of the night. The Workman’s Cocktail Hour puts a bee’s knees, daiquiri, Manhattan or old fashioned at $11 from 5 to 7, in a dark room with candlelit booths and deer heads on the wall. Two minutes up Newark Avenue from Skinner’s. Honest caveat: it’s 21+, it takes no reservations, and it doesn’t open until 5, whatever the older lists say about 4pm.

04Pint

On nowStarts soon

LGBTQ bar at Wayne & Grove · 34 Wayne St · $

  • Order thisA $5 well or a $4 Miller Lite before 7
  • Happy hourArrive 6:30 · happy hour daily until 7pm

Verdict: the last deal of the night, and the cheapest drink on the route after Hudson Hall. $5 wells, $4 Miller Lite and Yuengling and $6 wine until 7pm, with free popcorn. Five minutes’ walk south of The Archer. The move: order at the bar the minute you walk in. If it’s a Monday, martinis are $5 all night, so you can stay. Honest caveat: it’s a small room, and it fills up on trivia night (Wednesday).

05Grace O’Malley’s

On nowStarts soon

Irish pub on the plaza · 140 Newark Ave · $$

  • Order thisA pint, or a whiskey from $8 a pour
  • Happy hourArrive 7:20 · open till 2am (3am Thu–Sat)

Verdict: the finish, because it’s back on the plaza and it stays open. Grace O’Malley’s is the big Irish pub on Newark Avenue: fourteen screens, NFL Sunday Ticket and the Premier League, live bands and DJs at night, and whiskey from $8. Honest caveat: there’s no happy hour here, so this round is full price. If you want to keep going past 10, The Grove Station across from the PATH runs karaoke every night.
