Alphabet City happy hour means the East Village’s cheap-drinks DNA with none of the St Marks foot traffic. The best deals right now: The Wayland pours $1 oysters Mon–Fri 4–6pm, Drop Off Service cuts every drink to half price from 3pm weekdays and 1pm weekends, Otto’s Shrunken Head runs 2-for-1 Buds and wells 2–8pm, and Ama Raw Bar does $1.25 oysters with an $11 lychee martini. The neighborhood runs Avenue A to D between Houston and 14th, with Tompkins Square Park in the middle and the L at 1st Ave as the way in. Real happy-hour deals
Seven bars with an actual discounted window, ranked by value. Two of them made our NYC oyster happy hour guide.
The Wayland On now
The best happy hour in Alphabet City, and it got earlier — the window now runs Mon–Fri 4–6pm, not the 5–7 you’ll still see on stale listings. $1 oysters, $7 oyster shooters, $10 cocktails, and a $15 beer-and-burger that makes dinner plans irrelevant. The Garden Variety Margarita is built on kale juice and shouldn’t work, but does. There’s live music most nights, the kitchen’s pernil sandwich has its own following, and the room runs late. The Local Move: order the shooter at least once — oyster, vodka, done. The Honest Caveat: the deal ends at 6pm sharp, so this is a start-here bar, not a roll-in-at-7 bar.
Ama Raw Bar On now
The cheapest sit-down oysters in the neighborhood: $1.25 apiece, Mon–Fri 5–7pm, with three house sauces and an $11 lychee martini that outsells everything else for a reason. The room is small, warm, and unfussy — you sit down for a half-dozen and stand up two hours later. The Why: this is a raw-bar happy hour at dive-bar math, two blocks from Tompkins Square Park. The Honest Caveat: there’s a 24-oyster cap per person and tables turn in about 90 minutes during the deal; weekends they open at 4pm and the discount window shifts — call before you build a Saturday around it.

Drop Off Service On now
Still the single best value east of Avenue A. Every drink drops to half price during happy hour — 3–8pm on weekdays, 1–8pm on weekends, the widest window on this page. It’s named for the laundromat that used to fill the space, there were 19 taps at last count, and the dark-wood room feels like a proper local that never got a rebrand. No website, barely an Instagram — that’s the point. The Honest Caveat: a few listings peg the deal at $3–5 pints and a couple bucks off liquor rather than a flat half-off; either way, nothing on the avenue beats five hours of discounted rounds. Start here, wander after.

Ace Bar On now
The group-outing dive, solved. Happy hour runs daily 4–7pm with $3–6 drafts and well drinks, and the two big rooms are a rec center with a liquor license: pool, darts, skee-ball, pinball, Big Buck Hunter, a photo booth, and a projector for the game. Open since 1993 and built for a crowd that can’t agree on anything. There’s no kitchen — this is a drinking-and-competing establishment. The Local Move: claim the skee-ball lanes before 6pm on a Friday or accept the waitlist. Worth It if you’re six people deep; still worth it if you’re two.
Otto’s Shrunken Head On now
A tiki bar run like a punk dive, with the longest weekday window in the neighborhood: 2-for-1 Budweisers, Bud Lights, and well drinks, Mon–Fri 2–8pm. Weekends bring $5 Bloody Marys, 4–8pm. Up front it’s red vinyl booths and shrunken-head mugs; in back there’s free live music most nights — rockabilly, surf, garage — with no cover. The Verdict: the best value-per-hour on this list that isn’t Drop Off Service, and the only one with a fish tank. The Honest Caveat: it sits on 14th Street at the neighborhood’s top edge, so pair it with Mona’s or Drop Off Service rather than the 5th Street dives.

Niagara On now
The old A7 hardcore corner, now a bar with one of the most generous windows around: happy hour from open until 7pm every single day — $5 house wine, $5 drafts, $8 wells — plus a 2–4am nightcap round Sunday through Wednesday. Doors open 3pm weekdays, 2pm weekends. The Joe Strummer mural on the Avenue A side isn’t decoration, it’s lineage: bands still play, and the Lei Lounge downstairs is a low-lit tiki room for when the night refuses to end. The Local Move: land a window seat facing Tompkins Square Park at 6pm and watch the whole neighborhood walk by.
Doc Holliday’s On now
New York’s self-proclaimed only honky-tonk, and nobody’s proven them wrong since 1994. Happy hour runs Mon–Fri, roughly 4:30–7pm: cheap wells, pitchers of Bud Light, and buy-one-get-one deals that vary by night — ask what’s running. Cowboy boots on the ceiling, house rules hand-painted on the wall, a country jukebox with zero internet access. The Local Move: grab a slice from next door and bring it in; regulars have done it for years. The Honest Caveat: it’s cash-friendly early, and the exact window is reviews-sourced — confirm with the bartender, who will enjoy correcting you.
Dives & honest prices
No happy hour, no need — these rooms are cheap at 4pm and cheap at 2am. More in our best dive bars in NYC guide.
7B Horseshoe Bar (Vazac’s)
No happy hour because it doesn’t need one — 7B is cheap all the time, with tallboys and pitchers under $20 and a beer-and-a-shot rhythm that hasn’t changed in decades. The U-shaped bar gave it the name, the photo booth and pinball do the rest, and the jukebox leans punk because this corner earned it. You’ve seen the room whether you know it or not: The Godfather Part II, Crocodile Dundee, the Life Café façade in Rent. Open noon to 4am, every day. The Verdict: if you only hit one bar in Alphabet City with no discount attached, it’s this one. Sit at the horseshoe. Stay a while.

Sophie’s
Where the neighborhood actually drinks when Ace is wall-to-wall birthday parties. Sophie’s has held its stretch of East 5th Street since the ’80s: cheap pints, a pool table with a waitlist of quarters, a jukebox doing real work, and zero decor decisions since sometime last century. No happy hour, no website, no problem — the everyday prices are the deal. Open daily 3pm–4am. The Local Move: weeknights, when the pool table is actually gettable. Worth It: always, if your definition of a bar is a room that leaves you alone.

Mona’s
The dive that moonlights as one of the best traditional-music rooms in Manhattan. Mona’s pours cheap pints in a brick-walled room with a pool table and a jukebox, then hands the corner to live players — old-time and bluegrass jams early in the week, trad jazz that’s become quietly famous among working musicians. No posted happy hour; the prices just stay low. Open daily 3pm–4am on the quiet upper end of Avenue B. The Local Move: go early in the week when the string-band jam takes over the front room — order a pint and don’t talk over the fiddle.

Bitters, tins & destination rooms
When the drink is the event, not the discount. More in our best cocktail bars in NYC guide.
Amor y Amargo
There’s no happy hour here, and it would be beside the point — Amor y Amargo is America’s first bitters bar, back at its original 6th Street address since early 2025 after a renovation, and still the strongest cocktail room on the neighborhood’s western edge. Sother Teague’s tiny, mostly standing-room tasting room has ranked among the world’s best bars; the drinks are built on amari and bitters, not sugar. Order the 8 Amaro Sazerac or whatever spritz is on the chalkboard. Open daily from 5pm. The Why: after two half-off rounds somewhere cheap, one serious drink here lands better than three more anywhere else.

Maiden Lane
A European tinned-fish bar in the old Life Café corner space, with wraparound windows staring straight into Tompkins Square Park — the closest thing to drinking outside while seated indoors. There’s no gimmick pricing because the whole menu is honest: $4 cheap beer, $7 wine by the glass, $7 shot sets (whiskey and pickle, tequila and sangrita), and tins from $9 up to serious Ramón Peña money. The Local Move: a michelada, a tin of sardines, good bread, window seat. Open till 2am Thursday–Saturday, so it works as a first stop or a last one. Skip It if you need a kitchen doing hot-food theater.
Alphabet City happy hour: FAQ
What time is happy hour in Alphabet City?
Most Alphabet City happy hours run 4–7pm. The outliers are the good news: Otto’s Shrunken Head starts 2-for-1 drinks at 2pm on weekdays, Drop Off Service runs 3–8pm weekdays and 1–8pm weekends, and Niagara’s $5 drafts run from open until 7pm every day.
Does The Wayland still have a happy hour?
Yes — Monday through Friday, 4 to 6pm, with $1 oysters, $7 oyster shooters, $10 cocktails, and a $15 beer-and-burger. Note the window moved up: older listings still show 5–7pm, but the deal now ends at 6pm.
