The short version

- CheapestPeter Dillon’s — $4 shots and $6 pints, all day, every day, no window.
- Best roomBen & Jack’s — $1.75 Blue Points and $12 martinis at a steakhouse bar, Mon–Fri 4–6pm.
- WeekendsTaste NY — $3 off wine, cocktails and draft, all day Sat and Sun. The only weekend deal in the building.
The best Grand Central happy hour deals right now are Docks Oyster Bar at $1.50 an oyster seven days a week, Tartinery at half off every wine and beer inside the terminal itself, Ben & Jack’s at $1.75 Blue Points and $12 martinis at a steakhouse bar, and Peter Dillon’s at $4 shots and $6 pints all day, every day. Here is what most guides get wrong: there are exactly two real happy hours inside Grand Central Terminal, and the famous one — the Oyster Bar’s $1.50 oysters — is not one of them. I have grouped these by how far you have to walk. Inside the building first, then the blocks around it, then the roofs, then whatever is still serving at midnight.

Inside Grand Central Terminal
Two real happy hours in the whole building, and four rooms worth knowing about anyway. For the food side of the terminal, see our Grand Central restaurants guide.
Tartinery On now
This is the one. Half off every wine by the glass, every beer and the seasonal spritz, 4 to 7 Monday through Friday, on the Dining Concourse — no stairs, no street, no coat. Tartinery lists wine at $13–$17 and beer at $10–$11, so half off puts you around $6–$8 a glass. That is a real discount, not a rounding error dressed up as a deal. The Local Move: it’s a counter, not a bar, so claim a seat before the 5:30 wave comes down the ramp from the Main Concourse. The Honest Caveat: the terminal’s own directory lists shorter hours than Tartinery does. Call if you’re cutting it fine near closing.

Taste NY On now
Every guide to this building misses this one, including the MTA’s own. Taste NY is a New York State shop and bar in the 45th Street passage upstairs, and Grand Central’s own events page lists a standing $3 off any glass of wine, hand-crafted cocktail or draft beer — all day Saturday, all day Sunday. Not a two-hour window. The whole weekend. That matters because the Oyster Bar is dark on weekends and Tartinery’s deal is weekdays only, which makes this the only discounted drink inside Grand Central on a Saturday. The Local Move: they’ll pour it to go, which almost nothing else in the building will do. Base prices aren’t posted, so the $3 is the number to hold them to.

Grand Brasserie
Vanderbilt Hall stopped being an event space and became a 400-seat French brasserie, and the useful fact about it isn’t the food — it’s the clock. Seven days, 7am to 2am, under a landmarked ceiling, which makes it the answer to both the early train and the one you missed. Marble bar, 400 labels, forty of them by the glass. Worth knowing: their site advertises a happy hour page, but it sits in a cluster of private-event pages and I couldn’t get a price or a window off it, so I’m not printing one. Call 929-577-4446 before you plan around a deal. Go for the hours and the room and treat anything else as a bonus.
Grand Central Oyster Bar
Two myths to kill. First, the $1.50 happy-hour oysters people still repeat: there is no trace of them on the restaurant’s own site, on Grand Central’s directory, or on any current listing. I looked twice. Don’t plan around a price nobody publishes. Second, every “the Oyster Bar closed again” headline still floating around describes 2020 — it has been trading normally for years. The real caveat is the calendar: its own site says closed Sundays, and the terminal directory and OpenTable both list it weekdays only. The Verdict: come for the Guastavino vaults, the counter and thirty kinds of oyster at full price. Tuesday, not Saturday.

The Campbell
John W. Campbell’s 1923 office — 25-foot hand-painted ceiling, stone fireplace, the whole thing. It is the room everyone means when they say “drinks at Grand Central,” and I checked three separate official sources looking for a deal. There isn’t one. Cocktails run $22 to $28, beer is a flat $12, wine starts at $19. Worth It if you’re impressing someone or burning an hour before a late train. Skip It if you’re counting. The Honest Caveat: there’s a dress code at dinner — no shorts, no athletic wear, no hats — and the venue’s site and its operator’s site disagree on whether it opens at noon or 3pm on weekdays.

Tracks Raw Bar & Grill
$7 bottles and $8 drafts with no discount required — the lowest list price on any bar inside Grand Central, and lower than what some places on this page charge you during happy hour. Open noon to midnight, seven days. The catch is geography: Tracks sits on the Grand Central Madison concourse, which is the LIRR level, a long escalator ride below Metro-North. If your train is upstairs and you have twenty minutes, this is the wrong answer. If you’re waiting on the LIRR, it’s the only real bar down there. The Local Move: bottles are $1 off to go, which is a legitimate reason to buy the train beer here instead of at the newsstand.

The real deals, five minutes out
Where the value actually lives — all of it east or south of the terminal. More raw bar in our NYC oyster happy hour guide.
Docks Oyster Bar On now
Oyster du jour and littlenecks at $1.50 apiece, 3 to 7, all week long — not weekdays only, not a Monday gimmick. Four hours, seven days, two blocks south of the terminal at Third and 40th. Draft beer runs $6 to $8 and wine starts at $6. The Honest Caveat: the cocktails are not the deal. Their happy hour list still prices the classics at $15 and the craft ones at $17 and $18, which is the regular Midtown number with a menu header on it. Order oysters and a beer and you’ve beaten every raw bar on this page. Their own menu asks you not to save seats during happy hour, which tells you exactly how full that bar is by 5:30.
Ben & Jack’s Steakhouse On now
This is the trick nobody at the tables knows about. Monday to Friday, 4 to 6, at the bar only: Blue Point oysters $1.75, beer $6, house wine and prosecco $10, martini or margarita $12, sangria $10. In a Midtown steakhouse. Two blocks east on 44th between Second and Third. The Verdict: the shortest window on this page and the best room-to-price ratio on it. You are drinking $12 martinis somewhere dinner is emphatically not $12. The Honest Caveat: two hours is tight and they’re closed Sunday entirely — this is a leave-at-4:15 deal, not a linger-till-7 one. Be there by 4:30 or don’t bother.
Peter Dillon’s On now
No window to race. Their own site puts it plainly: all day, all week — $4 shots (Jameson, Cuervo, Jägermeister) and $6 pints (Modelo, Yuengling, Miller Lite). Two blocks south on 40th between Park and Lex, open till 4am seven nights. The Verdict: if the only question is cheapest, this is the answer and the conversation is over. It’s a pub with TVs and no pretensions, and they’ll let you bring food in. The Honest Caveat: 21+ after 6pm, and it is exactly as unglamorous as $4 Jameson implies. Nobody comes here for the room. They come because a round of four costs less than one cocktail at The Campbell.

Dos Caminos Lexington On now
$6 Tecate, Corona and Pacifico, $8 margaritas, $8 sangria, $8 bar food — Monday to Friday, 3 to 6 and again from 9pm to close, bar and lounge only. Saturday the whole thing runs all day. That 9pm restart is the genuinely useful part: the kitchen shuts, the after-work crowd clears, and you get the same $8 margarita in a half-empty room. It’s at Lex and 46th in the base of an office tower, which is the vibe — big, bright, fine. The Honest Caveat: closed Sunday, and plenty of listings still claim the weekday window runs Monday to Saturday. It doesn’t. Saturday is its own all-day deal and Sunday there is nothing.

Bierhaus NYC On now
Half a litre of Hofbräu for $7, house wine $7, well drinks $7, 30% off appetizers — Monday to Thursday, 4 to 6:30, bar area only. That’s a real beer hall with real steins, three blocks up on Third at 45th. The Verdict: on volume per dollar nothing near Grand Central touches this. The Honest Caveat is two-part and it’s in the fine print: the deal is fenced to the bar, so the long communal tables in the hall don’t count, and it dies on Thursday — there is no Friday happy hour here. Their own site also has a duplicate page claiming 50% off apps instead of 30%. Assume 30 and be pleasantly surprised.

Mulligan’s Pub On now
Monday to Friday, 4 to 7: $5 Bud and Bud Light bottles, $7 drafts (Shock Top, Bud Light, Yuengling), $7 wells, $8 green tea shots, $8 select wines, $10 house cocktails. There’s also a $20 burger-and-a-beer from noon to 4 that quietly solves lunch. Two blocks south on Madison near 39th. The Verdict: the most complete posted menu of any pub in this radius — most of them tell you the window and hide the numbers. Mulligan’s prints them. The Local Move: it’s open till 4am Wednesday through Saturday, which around here is close to a miracle. Heads up: 20% service charge on parties of six or more.
mulligansnyc.com · See our Irish bars in NYC
Pera Mediterranean Brasserie On now
A different shape of deal. At the bar, 3:30 to 7, $24 gets you a wine, cocktail or beer plus two mezes off a ten-item list — grape leaves, Turkish chicken meatballs, saganaki bites, muhammara. Another round is $12, another two mezes $14. The Verdict: if you’re killing 90 minutes before a train and would otherwise buy a $19 cocktail and a $17 sandwich, this is the better trade. Mocktails are included at the same price, which is rarer than it should be. The Honest Caveat: the happy hour menu says daily, the hours page says Sunday is private events only. Treat it as Monday to Saturday. Bar only — the dining room doesn’t count.
Rooftops within a five-minute walk
Two roofs near the terminal. Only one publishes its prices. More rooms in our best cocktail bars in NYC guide.
Bookmarks Rooftop On now
Fourteen floors up on the Library Hotel at Madison and 41st. The “Plot Twist” menu runs until 6pm daily: $7 select beers against a $10–$13 list, $14 house wine and Aperol spritz, and half off the $95 Rooftop Tower — tuna tostadas, wings, mac sliders, franks in a blanket. The detail everyone gets wrong: the start time is seasonal. May through September the room opens at 1pm, so it’s a five-hour deal. October through April it doesn’t open until 4, so it’s two. The Verdict: worth the block for the terrace and the $7 beer; don’t come for the $20 cocktails outside the window. Kitchen shuts at 9:30 — this is an after-work room, not a night out.
bookmarkslounge.com · See our best wine bars in NYC
A to Z Rooftop on the Fifth On now
Sixteen East 39th, above a Turkish restaurant, and the view is the whole point — you are looking straight at the Empire State Building. Their own site posts a weekday happy hour, 4:30 to 6:30, with discounted cocktails, wine and beer. What they don’t post is the prices, so I’m not printing numbers somebody else guessed. Go knowing the window is real and the amount isn’t published. The Verdict: the closest thing to a genuine open-air roof within a five-minute walk of the terminal, and it is small — at 5pm in July it fills before you finish the walk. The Local Move: it opens at 4:30 and the deal ends at 6:30. Early is the entire strategy.

Late, cheap, and open when nothing else is
For when the 6:40 becomes the 11:20. See also our Friday happy hour guide.
SNAFU Bar On now
$10 wine, $8 shots including Casamigos, $12 cocktails — margarita, espresso martini, Moscow mule, Aperol spritz. All day, all night, seven days. No window, no race, no “sorry, that ended at seven.” Five blocks north on 47th between Park and Lex, open till 3am Wednesday through Saturday. The Verdict: this is a sports bar and it looks like one, but an $8 Casamigos shot at midnight in Midtown East is a genuinely unusual number. The Local Move: it’s the fallback when your 6:40 becomes an 11:20 and every deal on this page has expired. Nothing here is a destination. Everything here is available.

The Overlook
The specials calendar does the work here. Mondays: $5–$6 select drafts, $7 wells, $8 wine. Taco Tuesday: $3 chicken or beef tacos all day, $7 margaritas, $3 Estrella cans. Wednesday: $1 Bud Light drafts 7 to 9, $3 green tea shots 9 to 11, half-price wings. Thursday and Friday there is a Late Night Happy Hour from midnight to 3am at Monday’s prices. Weekends it’s $30 beer towers and $15 buckets. The Honest Caveat: they post a general 4–7pm happy hour with half-price appetizers but never say which days it runs, so check before you build an afternoon around it. Two-level sports bar on 44th, darts, bingo and a DJ on Fridays.
overlooknyc.com · See our downtown pick, Continental Sports Lounge
Albert’s Bar On now
One block south on 41st between Lex and Third, which makes this the shortest walk on the page to a bar that actually posts a happy hour: Monday to Friday, 3 to 6. What they don’t post is a single price. Their regular list runs $8–$11 drafts, $15–$18 wine and $17–$20 cocktails, so the discount has room to be meaningful or to be nothing, and I’m not guessing on their behalf. The Verdict: worth a look if you’re walking past at 5 and want a martini rather than a pint. The Honest Caveat: 21+ after 4pm, and it is a cocktail room, not a pub. Open till 2am on weeknights, later than most of Midtown East.

Grand Central happy hour: FAQ
What time does happy hour start near Grand Central?
Most start between 3pm and 4pm. Docks Oyster Bar, Dos Caminos and Pera start earliest at 3pm or 3:30pm; Tartinery, Ben & Jack’s, Bierhaus and Mulligan’s all start at 4pm. Peter Dillon’s and SNAFU run their deals all day with no window at all.
Is there a happy hour inside Grand Central Terminal?
Two, and that is the whole list. Tartinery on the Dining Concourse runs half off all wine by the glass, all beers and the seasonal spritz Monday to Friday 4–7pm. Taste NY in the 45th Street passage takes $3 off any wine, cocktail or draft beer all day Saturday and Sunday. The Campbell, Grand Brasserie and the Grand Central Oyster Bar publish no happy hour at all.
Does the Grand Central Oyster Bar have $1.50 oysters?
Not that anyone can verify. There is no trace of a happy hour or a $1.50 oyster price on the restaurant’s own website, on Grand Central’s directory, or on any current listing — the claim circulates but nothing backs it. The Oyster Bar is open and trading normally, and it is also closed Sundays, with the terminal directory and OpenTable both listing it weekdays only. For genuinely cheap oysters near Grand Central, go to Docks Oyster Bar ($1.50, seven days, 3–7pm) or Ben & Jack’s ($1.75, Mon–Fri 4–6pm).
Where can I get cheap drinks near Grand Central?
Peter Dillon’s on E 40th has $4 shots and $6 pints all day, every day, with no time window. Bierhaus on Third at 45th pours a half-litre of Hofbräu for $7 Monday to Thursday 4–6:30pm. Mulligan’s on Madison does $5 Bud bottles and $7 drafts Monday to Friday 4–7pm. SNAFU on E 47th charges $8 shots and $12 cocktails at any hour, including 2am.
Is there a rooftop bar near Grand Central with a happy hour?
Bookmarks Rooftop on top of the Library Hotel at Madison and 41st is the only one with verified prices: $7 select beers, $14 house wine and Aperol spritz, and half off the sharing tower, daily until 6pm. It opens at 1pm May to September and 4pm October to April, so the window shrinks in winter. A to Z Rooftop on E 39th posts a weekday 4:30–6:30pm happy hour but does not publish prices.
