Manhattan/Madison Square Garden

Bars Near
Madison Square Garden

Where to drink before the tip-off, after the encore, and while the LIRR decides your fate. Twenty-eight rooms, all re-checked in August, none of them closed.

Most happy hours here run 4–7pm — but The Rutherford and Avenida start at 11am.

  • 28 bars, all re-checked
  • pints from $6.50
  • a beer inside MSG: ~$15.75
  • 15 dead bars on rival lists

The best bars near Madison Square Garden right now are Bourbon and Branch, two minutes from the arena at $8 beer and $12 cocktails daily from 4pm; Mustang Harry’s, the cheapest verified pint in the cluster at $6.50; The Rutherford, whose happy hour runs eleven in the morning to six at night, seven days, on the Garden’s 8th Ave corner; Tara Mór, where any two plates cost $26; and Tír na Nóg directly across 31st Street, which dropped its happy hour for the fall menu but still pours 32 drafts and runs a $12 weekday lunch. A 16oz domestic inside the arena runs about $15.75 — a 2024 survey put Madison Square Garden top of the league for concession prices — so the walk is worth roughly two extra rounds. This guide is grouped by what you actually need: the verified deals, the rooftops on top of Penn Plaza, what is still open after the encore, and the rooms with no deal that are worth it anyway.

Happy hours near MSG we could actually verify

The rooms with a published deal and published prices, checked against the venue’s own menu, plus the one across 31st Street whose summer happy hour didn’t make the fall menu. Everything else on this page is honest about what it does not publish. More across the neighbourhood in our Midtown happy hour guide.

01Bourbon and Branch

the closest real happy hour to the arena · 155 W 33rd St · $$

  • Draft beer, house wine, High Noon$8 / $10 / $10
  • Every cocktail, including the $19 espresso martini$12
  • Happy hourEvery day 4–7pm

The closest real deal to the Garden, and we had it wrong. Cross 7th Ave from the arena’s northeast corner and you are here in under two minutes. Every day, 4–7pm: $8 draft beer, $10 wine, $10 High Noon, $12 on every cocktail on the list. We previously published this window as “unposted” with no prices. It is posted and priced, on their own beverage menu, and the file is dated May 2026. The local move: order the espresso martini. It is $19 on the regular menu — their menu calls it the best on the block — and $12 during happy hour. That is the biggest single cut in walking distance of Penn Station. The honest caveat: the name promises a bourbon programme the menu does not deliver. There is no standalone whiskey list; the bourbon lives inside the cocktails. Come for the price, not the pour list.

02Tara Mór

modern Irish room, the best food deal on the block · 150 W 30th St · $$

  • All draft beer$8
  • Any two apps, shares, fries or sides$26
  • Happy hourMon–Fri 4–6:30pm

The one to book if you are eating before the show. Every draft is $8, the Aperol spritz is $10, and the Midtown Mule, the margaritas and the house wine are all $12 — but the reason to walk the extra block south is the food: any two apps, shares, fries or sides for $26, which is the only real pre-game meal deal we could verify near the Garden. The honest caveat: the cheeseboard is excluded, and the window shuts at 6:30pm, half an hour earlier than almost everything else on this page — useless for a 7:30 tip-off unless you come straight from work. It runs to 2am seven nights, so it works after the show too, just at full price.

  • Weekday lunch menu, Mon–Fri 11:30am–3:30pm$12
  • 20oz Guinness / 20oz Harp or Smithwick’s$10 / $9
  • Happy hourNo happy hour this season

The summer happy hour is gone, so we are saying so. The Mon–Fri 4–7pm window and its $6 house pints came off a menu titled Summer Happy Hour 2026; the fall/winter menu on Tír na nÓg’s own site has no happy hour at all, and the 11pm–1am window that still floats around online isn’t there either. What it does post: a $12 lunch menu, Monday to Friday 11:30am–3:30pm (penne alla vodka, a cheesesteak, chicken tikka masala), and 32 drafts at full price, with a 20oz Guinness at $10 and Harp or Smithwick’s at $9. The verdict: still the easiest pre-Garden pint on the south side, but it is a location play now, not a deal. For an actual happy hour, walk two blocks to Bourbon and Branch. It shuts at 11pm on weekends and opens later on Garden event nights.

  • Harry’s Craft Lager draft, Bud Light + a Bushmills shot$7.50 / $21
  • Happy hour2–5pm and midnight–2am — days not posted

The cheapest pint we could verify within two blocks of the arena, and the only bar here that reopens its happy hour at midnight. $6.50 Bud Light draft or bottle, $6.50 for a 16oz PBR, $7.50 for their own craft lager, and $21 for a Bud Light and a Bushmills shot. Thirty years old as of October 2025, two floors, and they claim the longest bar in the city. The honest caveat, twice over. Their happy-hour menu posts the times and not the days, and their own About page still advertises a 3–9pm window with cosmos and Bellinis that are not on any current menu — so we publish the times and tell you the days are their omission, not ours. And the midnight–2am half cannot happen on a Sunday: the bar shuts at 1am. Every $5-and-$6 figure floating on the aggregators is from February 2023 and every one of them is now wrong.

  • Happy hourNo window published

We were publishing “rotating specials” and “event specials” for this room and neither exists. Searching those phrases returns our own pages and nothing else. The 4–8pm happy hour on the Stout website is the Financial District branch, not this one, and we let it bleed across. Pulled. What is real: $1 oysters every Monday, with a six-oyster minimum they publish and we never did. And the line on their own location page that actually matters — open earlier for all MSG events — which makes this the reliable 5pm room when the 4pm crowd has filled everything on 33rd. Cocktails otherwise run $12–$18, wine $14–$16. Note the address: they left 133 W 33rd in 2025 after twenty years. Any guide still sending you there has not checked since.

Three rooftops within a two-minute walk of the arena doors, two of them running seven-hour windows — and almost nobody heading to a show knows they are up there. See also our best rooftop bars in NYC guide.

  • Happy hour, seven days11am–6pm

  • Happy hourDaily 11am–6pm — seven hours

The single most useful bar on this page and the one nobody writes about. An eleven-to-six happy hour, seven days — seven hours, in a neighbourhood where four-to-seven is the norm — on a sports pub with a rooftop deck sitting on the Garden’s 8th Ave corner. It closes at 4am, so it is the rare room here that works both before the tip-off and after the encore. The honest caveat: the launch coverage from May 2024 quoted $7 beers, $10 wines and $12 cocktails, and we are not restating two-year-old numbers as current. The window is theirs, posted by them; the prices need a phone call. They also do not publish a street number anywhere we can find — walk to 33rd and 8th and you will see it.

  • Happy hourMon–Fri 11am–6pm — seven hours

There is a rooftop on top of Penn Plaza and it runs a seven-hour weekday happy hour. That sentence is doing a lot of work, because almost nobody arriving for a 7pm show knows it is up there. Mexican kitchen, yellow umbrellas, open 11am to 2am every day, and the happy hour runs 11am–6pm Monday to Friday on the venue’s own listing. The honest caveat: the $12-margarita and $7-beer figures everywhere online trace to opening coverage from May 2024. We are publishing the window, not the two-year-old prices. The local move: go at 5pm on a weekday, not 6:45 — it is inside the Penn Plaza complex, so it fills with the same crowd you are trying to get ahead of.

Read the fine print before you take the lift. Blu33 is a seasonal open-air roof over 33rd Street, but the 5–7pm drink specials — seven days, year-round, per the venue — run at the ground-level patio bar and indoor restaurant, not upstairs. Go up for the view and you pay list. Worth knowing: entry is free except on ticketed nights, and the roof is 21+. The rooftop runs May to October, Tue–Sat 3pm–1am and Sun–Mon 3pm–midnight; from October the indoor lounge takes over, daily 4pm–1am. No prices are published for the specials, so treat the window as the promise and ask at the bar.

The window is theirs and it is good. The prices are ours and we have pulled them. Juniper posts “Happy Hour 4:00–7:00pm Every day” and “Friday Happy Hour 2:00–7:00pm” on its own menus page, which is a five-hour Friday and the earliest start in the Penn cluster. But every price we were publishing traces back to a July 2023 PDF that the venue’s own site still links — parked on an abandoned staging domain — and the only other source is an aggregator stamped February 2023. Three-year-old numbers are not numbers. The local move: a two-minute walk further from the arena than the 33rd Street pubs, which on a sold-out night is the difference between a seat and a scrum.

Ignore the happy hour and come on a Wednesday. The homepage says 4pm–7pm and nothing else — no days, no prices, and no happy-hour section anywhere on the drinks menu. We had been describing “discounted drafts, wines and cocktails” that no source but us ever stated. Gone. What is real and better: Wine Wednesday, all bottles half price, 4pm to 9pm, published by the venue. Cocktails otherwise run $16, so that is the deal worth planning around. The best-run pub within three minutes of the arena, and it shuts before you get out. This is the Dead Rabbit team’s room inside Moynihan Train Hall — foosball, trad sessions, a proper pour, and walk-ins welcome. It closes at midnight Tuesday to Saturday and 11pm on Sunday and Monday, which means a Sunday show that lets out at 10:30 gives you half an hour. Treat it as a pre-game bar. They reference a happy-hour menu on their own site and publish neither the times nor the prices, so we are not inventing either. Worth knowing: the surrounding Moynihan food hall shuts at 10pm, so the whole building empties earlier than you would expect.

Three floors, more than 375 whiskeys, 36 screens — the answer when someone in the group wants the game on and someone else wants a rye worth thinking about. Their own site carries a happy-hour menu page; it renders client-side and we could not read a single price off it, so we are telling you it exists rather than guessing what is on it. The local move: four minutes south of the arena on 30th, far enough that the pre-show wave breaks before it reaches the door.

We have pulled the numbers, and the venue is the reason. Jack Doyle’s own specials page currently reads, in full: we are updating our specials, please stay tuned. The $5-and-$6 figures we were running came from one undated third-party listing, and we had quietly broadened its “$5 Bud Light draft and domestic bottles” into “$5 drafts”, which is not the same offer. Both gone until they repost. What stands: open 10am to 4am every day of the week, two levels with a full bar on each, and it is the home bar for West Virginia, Arsenal and the Minnesota Vikings — so check the fixture list before you promise anyone a quiet table.

Blarney Stone is what is left: a steam-table carvery, a bar with no design point of view, and prices set for people who work near Penn Station rather than people passing through it. Ten minutes north, so build the walk into your plan.

This is the correction we are least comfortable with, so we are putting it on the card. For months this page said Pennsylvania 6 ran half-price drinks Monday to Friday, noon to 8pm. Searching that claim returns this website and nothing else — not the venue’s homepage, not its drinks page, not its promotions page, not one aggregator. A noon-to-eight window spanning both lunch and dinner service was never plausible against their own posted hours. Withdrawn in full. What is actually here: an Art Deco room with a thirty-eight-foot marble bar and high ceilings, one block east of the Garden’s south face, lunch from 11:30 and dinner until 9pm. Ring ahead — parts of their own site have not been updated in a while.

FAQ

What is the closest bar to Madison Square Garden with a real happy hour?

Bourbon and Branch, at 155 W 33rd St, is the closest verified happy hour to the arena — under two minutes from MSG’s northeast corner, every day from 4pm to 7pm, at $8 for draft beer, $10 for wine and $12 for every cocktail on the list, including an espresso martini that costs $19 the rest of the time. Tír na Nóg at 254 W 31st is marginally closer to the south doors, but its fall/winter menu has no happy hour; the posted deal is a $12 lunch, Monday to Friday, 11:30am–3:30pm.

How much is a beer inside Madison Square Garden?

About $15.75 for a 16oz domestic. A 2024 survey of NBA arena concessions ranked Madison Square Garden the most expensive in the league, with two 16oz beers at $31.50. Two blocks south at Mustang Harry’s, a Bud Light draft during happy hour is $6.50 — so one round inside the building costs roughly what two and a half rounds cost across the street. That gap is the entire argument for drinking before you go in.

Where can I drink after a concert or game at MSG?

Molly Wee at 402 8th Ave is open until 4am Wednesday to Saturday, Jack Doyle’s at 240 W 35th is 10am to 4am every day, and John Sullivan’s at 210 W 35th runs 8am to 4am. Glass Ceiling Rooftop on Broadway is the only bar we found with a happy hour that actually starts at 10pm — $10 cocktails and $6 beer, Tuesday to Saturday. Two blocks east in Koreatown, Pocha 32 and BCD Tofu House run to 5am at weekends.

Is there a rooftop bar near Madison Square Garden?

Three, all within a couple of minutes. Avenida sits on the roof of 1 Penn Plaza with a happy hour from 11am to 6pm on weekdays. The Rutherford, on the Garden’s 8th Ave corner, runs 11am to 6pm seven days and stays open until 4am. Blu33 at 325 W 33rd has a seasonal open-air roof, but its 5–7pm drink specials run downstairs at the patio bar, not on the roof — a distinction worth knowing before you take the lift.

Where should I eat before a Knicks or Rangers game?

Tara Mór at 150 W 30th does any two apps, shares, fries or sides for $26 alongside $8 drafts, Monday to Friday until 6:30pm — the only real pre-game food deal we could verify. O’Briens at 220 W 31st has 195 seats and oysters delivered daily from Long Island, which solves the large-group problem. Nick + Stef’s at 9 Penn Plaza has its own private entrance into the arena, but the kitchen shuts at 9pm and it is closed on Sundays.

Which bars near Madison Square Garden have closed?

A lot of them, and most guides have not noticed. Confirmed gone: The Liberty (29 W 35th), Stitch Bar (247 W 37th), Local West and Lucy’s Cantina Royale (both 1 Penn Plaza), Houndstooth Pub (520 8th Ave, closed August 2024 after 13 years), Blarney Rock Pub (137 W 33rd), Rock & Reilly’s (218 W 35th), Féile (131 W 33rd), Brother Jimmy’s (416 8th Ave), Tempest Bar (407 8th Ave), the Distinguished Wakamba (543 8th Ave), Café 31 (220 W 31st), The Flying Puck (364 7th Ave), Twins Pub and The Pennsy food hall (2 Penn Plaza, closed March 2020). Several of them still have live websites advertising happy hours. Stout has moved from 133 W 33rd to 215 W 35th and Legends is now The Football Factory — two more addresses the older lists still get wrong.
