Black Rabbit: A Greenpoint English Pub With a Daily 4–8pm Happy Hour
Black Rabbit opened on Greenpoint Avenue in 2007 and looks like it could have been pouring pints since 1807 — dark wood, candlelight, a working fireplace, and the bar’s signature “snugs”: private wooden booths with their own swinging saloon-style doors and a “please send me more drinks” call light. There’s a back beer garden for summer and board games for any season. It’s an English-pub homage done with real care, owned by Kent Lanier (whose great-grandfather’s portrait hangs over the bar).
It’s the platonic local: cozy, low-key, and built for lingering. The happy hour is one of the most generous in the neighborhood, and the late 8pm cut-off makes it useful well past the after-work rush.
The Happy Hour
Four hours, every day — a rare amount of runway in NYC:
- Every day, 4–8pm
- $8 signature deal — a Black Rabbit lager with a bourbon shot, or the rotating cocktail of the day
- $5 Black Rabbit lager on its own; pints have run as low as $4 during happy hour
- The 8pm cut-off — later than most, so you’re not racing the clock
It’s a classic-pub deal in a room that makes you want to stay for it.
The Drinks
The house Black Rabbit lager leads, alongside a solid craft-beer list and a short, smart wine selection. The signatures are the picklebacks (whiskey chased with Brooklyn Brine juice) and gingerbacks (whiskey with fresh ginger), plus seasonal cocktails — hot toddies in winter, espresso martinis year-round. Bartenders know their stock.
The Food
British-leaning pub fare: Welsh rarebit, burgers and sliders, a cheese-and-charcuterie board, bratwurst, and house pimento cheese with saltines. The kitchen runs until midnight. The menu is intentionally slim — and they’ll let you bring in outside food, which tells you everything about the come-hang-out ethos.
The Room
Dark, candle-lit and cozy, with those private snugs as the marquee feature — deep booths with swinging doors and call lights for clandestine date-night canoodling. A working fireplace carries winter; the back beer garden (open until 10pm) carries summer. Board games are on hand, and “Nerd Alert” trivia runs Tuesday nights. Good for groups up to around 75.
