G Lounge Chelsea: The Iconic Gay Bar Is Back, and the Weekday Happy Hour Is the Move
G Lounge Chelsea opened on West 19th Street in 1996 and spent two decades as one of the defining rooms of New York queer nightlife — the wraparound bar, the frozen cosmos, the cameos in Sex and the City and Queer as Folk, the regulars who ranged from Chelsea locals to Anderson Cooper. It went dark in 2016. In 2025, original co-founder Michael McGrail brought it back to the same block, and the part most people are sleeping on is the happy hour: Tuesday through Friday, 4 to 7pm.
This isn’t a nostalgia act. The room got a real renovation — the DJ booth moved front and center over a proper dance floor, the sound and lighting are new, and the seating is actually built for staying a while. Come early and you get the good version of this place: craft cocktails, a low-key crowd that’s here for the community as much as the drinks, and room to hear each other. Later it turns into drag, DJs and dancing. Both are worth your time — but 4 to 7 is where the value lives.

The Happy Hour
Happy hour runs Tuesday through Friday, 4 to 7pm, at the bar — reduced prices on drinks in one of the most storied queer rooms in the city. The cocktail list is the draw, with beer, wine and zero-proof pours also in the mix. Two catches worth knowing: the bar is closed Mondays, and the deal isn’t valid during special events — G Lounge runs a lot of them — so if you’re coming specifically for happy hour it’s worth a quick call to (646) 863-2914 first. Ask the bar for the current happy-hour list when you sit down, and check gloungechelsea.com for what’s on that night.
The honest caveat. G Lounge doesn’t publish the happy-hour list anywhere public — no prices on its site, no menu online. What we have is the window, checked with the bar. So treat 4–7pm as reliable and the specific pours as something to ask about when you sit down. If a page anywhere quotes you exact happy-hour prices for this room, be suspicious of it.
The local move. Tuesday and Wednesday. The event calendar is thinner mid-week, which means the deal is far less likely to be blacked out, and 4 to 7 in a near-empty G Lounge is the version of this room you can actually hold a conversation in. Friday at 6 is a different building.
The Room
You’ll find it mid-block on West 19th between Seventh and Eighth, a few steps from the 1 train at 18th Street and a short walk from the A/C/E and F/M at 14th. Inside it’s a lounge first and a club second until the night gets late: a long bar, low seating, and a dance floor anchored by that relocated DJ booth. The programming is the real signature — drag shows, figure-drawing nights, DJ sets and community nights built for the trans, nonbinary and QTPOC crowds. It’s a Chelsea gay bar genuinely built around who’s in the room, not just what’s on the speakers. Schedules rotate, so check @gloungechelsea for the current calendar. It earns its spot on our guides to the best happy hours in Chelsea and the best gay bars in NYC.
The Drinks and the Kitchen
Beyond the cocktails the bar keeps it unfussy: canned hard seltzers, a straightforward beer and wine list, and zero-proof mocktails for anyone not drinking. The food is bar food done right — pizza by the pie, including a gluten-free and dairy-free option, and oysters, which is a genuinely unexpected thing to find at a dance bar. It’s casual and 21+. Menus change; ask at the bar.
Who G Lounge Is For
| Occasion | Why it works |
|---|---|
| An after-work drink in Chelsea | Happy hour Tue–Fri 4–7pm, before the room fills and the music comes up |
| A night out that’s actually queer-centered | Drag, DJs and community nights run by and for the LGBTQ+ crowd |
| A lower-key weeknight | Early evening is a lounge, not a club — you can actually talk |
| Showing someone the real Chelsea | A 1996 institution reopened by its original founder, one block off Seventh |
| A big night with a line-up | Ticketed events run most weeks — grab the ticket, and skip the happy-hour maths |
How to Plan Your Visit
If you want the deal, come Tuesday to Friday between 4 and 7, and call first — that one phone call is the difference between a happy hour and a full-price cocktail on an event night. If you want the night rather than the deal, the ticketed events are the thing G Lounge does better than almost anywhere in Chelsea, and a table is worth booking for a group. Closed Mondays either way.

G Lounge FAQ
Does G Lounge have a happy hour?
Yes — Tuesday through Friday, 4 to 7pm at the bar, with reduced drink prices. It isn’t valid during special events, and G Lounge runs a lot of them, so call ahead if you’re coming specifically for the deal. G Lounge is closed Mondays.
Is happy hour valid during special events?
No. Ticketed and special-event nights are excluded, which is why the two are worth treating as separate trips — come at 4 for the deal, or buy a ticket and come for the night. A quick call to (646) 863-2914 tells you which kind of night it is.
Where is G Lounge and what’s the nearest train?
225 West 19th Street, between Seventh and Eighth Avenues in Chelsea. The 1 at 18th Street is closest; the A/C/E and F/M at 14th Street are a short walk.
Is G Lounge a gay bar?
Yes. It opened in 1996 as one of NYC’s defining queer nightlife spots and reopened in 2025 under original co-founder Michael McGrail, with programming built around the LGBTQ+ community.
What are G Lounge’s hours?
Closed Monday. Tuesday to Thursday 4pm–midnight, Friday 4pm–2am, Saturday 2pm–2am, and Sunday 2pm–midnight. Table and section reservations are on Resy.
Address, phone and opening hours re-verified against G Lounge’s own site in August 2026 — note the bar is now closed Mondays. The 4–7pm happy hour window comes from a July 2026 first-party check; G Lounge no longer publishes happy hour details on its website, so confirm with the bar before visiting for the deal. Happy hour is not valid during special events.
