Happy Hour at Niagara

Niagara is a legendary rock-and-roll dive on the corner of Avenue A and East 7th Street, opened in 1997 by musician Jesse Malin and partners on the former site of the hardcore landmark A7. The Joe Strummer mural out front, painted where his “Redemption Song” video was shot, tells you exactly what kind of place this is.

Inside, it’s a gritty come-as-you-are front bar with murals by Yoshitomo Nara and Kenny Scharf, plus a back room with a stage for punk, hip-hop and reggae and late-night DJ dance parties that run until 4am. Cheap drinks, loud music and East Village history make it a downtown institution.
