McKeon’s Bar & Restaurant: A Traditional Irish Pub on Woodlawn’s McLean Avenue

McKeon’s, at 996 McLean Avenue, is one of the oldest Irish pubs on the “Emerald Mile” — the stretch of McLean Avenue that serves as the social hub of one of the last Irish enclaves in the New York metro area. It’s a small, cozy, beautifully wood-lined room where the Guinness pours are good, the pub food is hearty, and the weekday-lunch regulars have clearly known each other for decades. Technically the address is in Yonkers, but McLean Avenue runs right along the Woodlawn section of the Bronx, and that’s how most New Yorkers get here.

It’s a proper neighborhood Irish pub — steaks, Guinness, and a Sunday brunch that locals plan their weekends around.

The Happy Hour

Two reasons to time your visit:

  • Early Bird Special, Monday–Thursday 4–6pm — discounts on select food and drinks
  • Sunday Brunch, 10am–3pm — a Full Irish Breakfast, Steak & Eggs or a Chef’s omelet, each served with a complimentary mimosa, Bloody Mary, beer or wine
  • Regular menu is available at brunch too, if you’re not in a breakfast mood

The Drinks

Well-poured Guinness is the headline — “best wings in the area. Great food in general. Guinness. Did I mention Guinness?” as one regular put it — backed by Irish beers, ciders, and a full bar.

The Food

Traditional Irish and pub fare, and a cut above the average for the area: sizzling steaks (14oz and 16oz, plus a filet, with mushrooms and onions), shepherd’s pie, Dublin-style fish and chips, Irish bangers and mash, a famously cheesy French onion soup, wings and Thai chicken wraps. Most entrees come with soup and salad. The steaks, in particular, draw people from across the neighborhood.

The Room

Small and cozy, with a warm wood interior and traditional Irish decor, sports on the screens, and outdoor seating in season. It’s a $$ spot with a near-universal local recommendation — the kind of “best-kept secret in Woodlawn” that’s been quietly excellent for years.
