- The splurgeFelix – a blowtorched s’mores latte for ~$15.

The best coffee in NYC splits into two camps, and this guide covers both. For the coffee itself, the destinations are Sey in Bushwick (world-class light roasts), Abraço and La Cabra in the East Village, and Devoción’s skylit Williamsburg atrium. For actually getting work done, the cafes to know are Devoción on a weekday, Variety in Greenpoint (open wifi, open late), Café Grumpy’s Greenpoint flagship, Stumptown in the Village, and Think Coffee near NYU. Twelve spots, each with the drink to order, the price, and – crucially – an honest read on the laptop-and-wifi situation, because some of the best coffee rooms in the city (Abraço, La Cabra, Sey on weekends) will not let you camp. No happy hours here; the coffee carries it.

The best coffee, ranked
Destinations for the cup itself — some are strictly no-laptops. More sweets in our best pastries guide.
Sey Coffee
The coffee nerd’s pilgrimage. Sey in Bushwick roasts some of the best light-roast single-origin in the country, and the pour-overs (rare lots run $20-30) are a genuine tasting experience. The Verdict: come for the coffee, full stop – this is a destination, not a hang. The Honest Caveat: laptops are limited on weekdays and banned on weekends, so it’s a sit-and-sip spot, not a work cafe. Order a cortado (~$5.50) and let them talk you into a pour-over.

Abraço
Tiny, warm, and fiercely itself. Abraço is a few tables and a front patio in the East Village, and the espresso and the olive oil cake are the reason people squeeze in. The Verdict: one of the best quick coffees in the city. The Honest Caveat: it’s a hard no on laptops – this is a conversation-and-quick-turnover room by design. Come for a cortado (~$5) and the cake, stand at the counter, move on happy.

La Cabra
The Scandinavian one, sleek and serious. La Cabra’s cardamom latte (~$6) and the famous cardamom bun are the order in a minimalist East Village room. The Verdict: gorgeous space, excellent coffee, a proper design-forward cafe. The Honest Caveat: by design there’s no public wifi and an enforced no-laptop policy, and it packs out on weekends – so this is a sit-and-savor spot, not a work session. Get the bun.

Partners Coffee
The reliable Williamsburg roastery, buzzy and communal. Partners (the old Toby’s Estate) pours a great Oatchata latte (~$6-7) in a big industrial-airy room with long shared tables. The Verdict: consistently good coffee and a fine place to sit for a couple of hours. The Honest Caveat: outlets are scarce and it packs out, so it’s fine for a short session but not an all-day office. No laptop ban, at least.

Cinico Coffee
The Instagram splurge, and better than it has any right to be. Cinico in Murray Hill does a glossy Italian cafe thing, and the signature is the CappucCINICO (~$11), dusted with edible 24k gold. The Verdict: yes it’s a gimmick, but the espresso underneath is legit. The Local Move: there’s a designated laptop area and wifi, so you can actually get some work done between photos. Come for the spectacle, stay for a surprisingly good cappuccino.

Felix Roasting Co.
The most ornate coffee in the city, and priced like it. Felix’s NoMad lounge is all velvet and marble, and the Hickory-Smoked S’mores Latte (~$15) arrives blowtorched under a bell jar. The Verdict: it’s a whole experience, and a genuinely good one for a treat or a date. The Honest Caveat: the wifi is time-capped to deter camping and the prices are steep, so it’s a short, special sit, not a work spot. Get the s’mores latte once.

Cafés to actually work from
Wifi, outlets, and no laptop-shaming — the honest remote-work picks.
Devoción
The best big room in Brooklyn to work from – on a weekday. Devoción’s Williamsburg flagship is a 2,500-square-foot skylit atrium with a plant wall, fast wifi and real outlets, and the cortado (~$5) and guava croissant are excellent. The Verdict: a rare cafe that’s both a serious coffee spot and a great office. The Honest Caveat: wifi is switched off on weekends to clear the laptop campers – so make it a Monday-to-Friday work spot.

Variety Coffee Roasters
The quiet MVP of work-from cafes. Variety in Greenpoint has open wifi (no password), real seating including a calmer back nook, and unusually late hours (to about 9pm) – which is exactly what you want when the 5pm cafe crowd clears out. The Verdict: great iced oat latte (~$5.50), no laptop ban, open late. The Local Move: come in the evening for a nearly empty room and a full battery.
Café Grumpy
The Greenpoint original, and the only Grumpy where you can actually work. Cafe Grumpy’s flagship (est. 2005) is the one with wifi, multiple seating rooms, and an established laptop crowd, plus a proper Heartbreaker cortado (~$5). The Verdict: cozy, multi-room, unpretentious, and no weekend laptop ban. The Local Move: the back rooms are quieter – grab a corner and settle in.

Stumptown Coffee
The dependable Village work cafe. Stumptown’s Greenwich Village room (a former bookstore) is big and woody with plenty of tables, wifi and outlets, and it tolerates a multi-hour sit. The Verdict: reliable coffee – the Nitro Cold Brew (~$6) is the order – in one of the better central spots to open a laptop. The Honest Caveat: it gets a bustle, so it’s productive-cafe energy, not library-quiet.
Think Coffee
The NYU study lounge that everyone can use. Think’s Mercer Street original is sofas, banquettes, communal tables, free wifi and outlets at most seats – a de facto office near Washington Square. The Verdict: the specialty lattes (the Cookie Butter is ~$5.25) are solid, and no one’s going to laptop-shame you. The Honest Caveat: it’s crowded midday and during NYU exams, so come early for a good seat.

Now or Never Coffee
The SoHo work spot from ex-Blue Bottle founders. Now or Never on Grand Street has plenty of seats, wifi you can even book for a meeting, and a standout chai (~$5-7). The Verdict: a genuinely good SoHo cafe that welcomes a laptop. The Honest Caveat: outlets are limited, so come charged. The Local Move: it’s calmer than the Broadway coffee chains a block away – a better place to actually focus.
