The great whiskey collections
The browse-the-list temples — deep shelves, ladders, and bartenders who know the range. More rooms in our best cocktail bars in NYC guide.
Brandy Library
The deepest brown-spirits collection in the city, full stop. Fifteen hundred–plus bottles line backlit shelves you reach by rolling library ladders, in a hushed Tribeca lounge built for leather chairs and low jazz. This isn’t a quick-pour spot — it’s a sit-down, browse-the-book, ask-the-bartender place, and the range runs from approachable pours to vintage bottlings you won’t find elsewhere. The move: come early on a weeknight, take a spirit-bench recommendation, and don’t rush. Honest caveat — it’s a destination, reservations help, and this is not a drop-in.

The Flatiron Room
Whiskey and live jazz under a coffered ceiling, with more than 1,200 bottles behind the bar. The Flatiron Room made this format — flights, bottle lockers, a band most nights — and it still does it best. Order a flight and let the staff walk you up the ladder from a solid pour to something rare. The move: reserve, and go for a set; this is a sit-and-stay evening, not a swing-by. There’s a second location in Murray Hill (9 E 37th, the old Fine & Rare space) if NoMad’s booked. Nowhere else pairs a list this deep with a room this good.

Keens Steakhouse
A 140-year-old chophouse with what Forbes called the city’s biggest single-malt Scotch list — hundreds of bottles, some rare and old. You don’t need the mutton to drink here: pull up at the mahogany Pub bar under tens of thousands of clay churchwarden pipes and order a Scotch you can’t get anywhere else. The room is 1885, landmarked, all dark wood and history. The move: skip the dining rooms, sit at the Pub bar, ask what’s open that’s old. It’s a living NYC institution with a genuinely serious whisky program hiding behind the steaks.

Copper & Oak
Whiskey-nerd territory, and proudly so. This tiny, candlelit Allen Street room is built around a wall of rare, vintage, and hard-to-find bottles — single-barrel bourbon, older Scotch, global oddities — with bartenders who’ll guide you to something you can’t get elsewhere. The move: don’t order what you know; tell them what you like and let them pour from the deep end. Honest caveat — it’s small, and the rare stuff climbs, but there are affordable drams too. Go for the pour you can’t get anywhere else.

Travel Bar
Effectively Brooklyn’s whiskey headquarters. Four hundred fifty–plus whiskies — bourbon, rye, American, Irish, Japanese, Scotch — on a Court Street corner, named to Whisky Advocate’s Top 101 U.S. Whisky Bars. They run flights and whiskey classes, so it’s as much school as bar. The move: grab a flight built around one style and compare side by side; the staff know the list cold. No other Brooklyn bar comes close on range, and it’s an easy, unpretentious hang — the anti–velvet-rope.

Whiskey bars with a happy hour
The ones with an actual deal — Caledonia even discounts a rotating whiskey. See more weekend happy hours.
Caledonia
The rare-whisky specialist above 79th Street, and the only Upper East Side bar that takes Scotch this seriously — 200-plus whiskies, everyday drams to rare single malts, in a proper Scottish pub with Scotch eggs to match. And it runs a genuinely rare thing: a whiskey-specific happy hour. Monday through Friday, wrapping at 7pm, it’s $2 off beer and wine plus a rotating ‘HH whiskey’ at 50% off that changes monthly. The move: ask what the month’s half-price pour is. Honest caveat — the start time isn’t posted, so confirm before a special trip. Sister bar on the UWS at 424 Amsterdam.

The Moonlight Mile On now
A low-key Greenpoint whiskey bar built for slow exploration, not rounds. Two hundred–plus rotating bottles across Scotch, bourbon, and rye, on Franklin Street, with sidewalk seats in summer and a decade of neighborhood regulars. This is the one to nurse a single good pour at. And the happy hour is real: Monday through Thursday, 5–7pm, $1 off all beer and wine plus rotating specials on select whiskeys. The move: come on a weeknight, take a bartender rec, stay a while. It’s the platonic neighborhood whiskey bar — pet-friendly, unhurried, and genuinely deep.
Whiskey Tavern On now
Cheap, unpretentious, and whiskey-serious — the anti-speakeasy. A no-frills Baxter Street pub with roughly 20 bourbons, several ryes, about 10 Scotches, and Irish and Japanese pours running $12–$46, plus a back patio. The happy hour is the move: Monday through Friday, 3–7pm — $8 wells, $8 wine, $5 Miller High Life, $10 shot-and-beer combos, $20 High Life pitchers, plus $12 wings and $7 tots. Honest caveat — the deal’s on the well stuff and beer, not the top-shelf whiskey, but the list’s fairly priced anyway. Whiskey depth at dive prices, steps from the courthouses.

The Shakespeare On now
A dark-wood British pub off Grand Central with a curated Scotch and British/Irish whisky selection and proper pub food — whisky-and-a-pint energy a block from the trains. It’s inside The William hotel but drinks like a neighborhood local. The happy hour runs long: Monday through Friday, 11am–6pm — $11 house wines and $2 off select IPAs, with mini fish & chips at $12 and a British grilled cheese at $10. Honest caveat — the deal’s on wine and beer, not the whisky, but the whisky list is why you stay after. The move: post-work pint at the bar, then work down the Scotch.
The Wayland On now
Whiskey-forward drinks with a front-porch feel. This Alphabet City bar is known for house-infused and smoked spirits — the signature ‘I Hear Banjos’ pairs apple-pie moonshine and applejack with applewood smoke — plus live bluegrass and folk most nights. The happy hour: Monday through Friday, 4–6pm, a $10 Garden Variety margarita and a $10 mezcal martini. Honest caveat — the HH pours are agave, not whiskey, so come for the deal and stay for the brown-spirits cocktails and the band. It’s the rare whiskey-leaning bar that’s also a genuinely fun night out.

Irish & Japanese specialists
When you want a specific pour done right. More Irish picks in our best Guinness in NYC guide.
The Dead Rabbit
A pilgrimage bar for Irish whiskey, and a multiple-time ‘World’s Best Bar.’ The ground-floor Taproom is the accessible move — pints and drams from one of the deepest Irish whiskey selections in the country, no reservation. Upstairs, the Parlor runs the award-winning cocktail program (book it). The move: start in the Taproom, order an Irish whiskey flight, then decide if you’re going up. Honest caveat — it’s a destination on Water Street and it gets busy, but the Taproom keeps it democratic. Nobody in the city does Irish whiskey with this much depth or pedigree.

Katana Kitten
The highball is the order. A World’s 50 Best Japanese-American bar on Hudson Street, Katana Kitten is built around Japanese whisky — a big collection and the city’s best Japanese-whisky highballs — across two floors papered with movie posters and dollar bills. The move: sit downstairs early, order a highball and a bar snack, and go before the weekend crush (it goes three-deep). Honest caveat — no happy hour and weekends are a scrum, so make it a weeknight. It’s the most fun you’ll have with Japanese whisky in New York.
